Should You Go “No Poo”?

Posted by Kimberly on 1/3/2014 to Skin Health
Many shampoos and conditioners have harsh chemical ingredients that can strip your hair of its natural oils. It can leave hair dry, brittle and dull. Some people have shunned these effects and pledged to return to a more natural system of caring for their hair. This system is known as “no poo,” and those who embrace it do not use shampoo or conditioner to clean their hair.

What is “No Poo”?

Going “no poo” doesn’t mean you stop washing your hair completely. It means that you use only natural ingredients to wash your hair. Instead, you wash your hair with baking soda and condition it with vinegar.
To clean, put 1 or 2 tablespoons of baking soda into a cup or two of water (using a 1 tablespoon:1 cup ratio). Make sure the mixture is dissolved, then apply it to your roots. Work it into your roots, then spread it through the rest of your hair. Rinse, and then condition with apple cider vinegar. You can dilute 1 teaspoon in 1 cup of water, then work it through your hair the way you would conditioner. If you don’t like the smell, you can add a drop of essential oil.

Why Choose “No Poo”

There are many reasons to go “no poo.” One of the most commonly cited reasons is that it helps to restore the natural pH balance of your hair, which can make it healthier and more vibrant. However, there is usually a transitional period while your hair adjusts to the changes. “No poo” is also a good alternative if you want to avoid the chemicals in hair products for health reasons.

Alternatives to “No Poo”

If you aren’t comfortable with the idea of using baking soda and vinegar to wash your hair, you can achieve similar results by selecting hair products that are chemical free and use natural ingredients. Just read labels to make sure they are as natural as possible.
