What are the functions of the adrenal glands?  The adrenal glands are small glands that sit on top of each kidney, like a hat. These glands are part of the endocrine system and are responsible for many biological functions mainly in the response to stress. This gland is composed of the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla, both of which have different functions.

The adrenal cortex secretes three different groups of hormones: (1) Mineralocorticoids - mainly aldosterone, (2) Glucocorticoids - mainly Cortisol or hydrocortisone, and (3) Sex Hormones - resemble testosterone. Mineralocorticoids help to control that amount of minerals salts (sodium and potassium) in the blood. Glucocorticoids main functions are to help maintain normal blood glucose concentration and along with the adrenal medulla’s hormones they maintain normal blood pressure and promote a normal recovery from inflammation. During times of stress such as intense emotions, surgery, or other traumas, glucocorticoids are also responsible for the body’s susceptibility to infections or allergies by decreasing the immune response.

The adrenal medulla secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine. These hormones are responsible for the "flight" or "fight" response in our body when we are exposed to danger. This portion of the adrenal glands has a faster response to stress than the adrenal cortex.

Overall, the adrenal glands are responsible for responding to stress. Prolonged exposure to stress results in muscle wasting, hyperglycemia, decreased immunity, and decreased allergic responses. It is important to efficiently manage stress, eliminate artificial stimulants to the adrenal glands such as caffeine and refined sugar, and nourish the adrenal glands periodically for optimal functioning.

How can I tell if my adrenal glands are fatigued? One of the first things to assess is your lifestyle and dietary habits.

•Do you eat products containing white flour and refined sugars?
•Are you exposed to physical or emotional stress?
•Do you drink caffeinated beverages?
•Do you use foods or beverages to increase your energy levels during the day?
•Do you smoke or use recreational drugs?
•Do you notice that you need more stimulants to achieve a desired level of energy?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, then your lifestyle is affecting the functioning of the adrenal glands.

There are simple ways to test for adrenal fatigue. One simple way is the Raglands Test, checking for postural hypoadrenia. The evaluation is performed by taking the blood pressure while lying down and then again upon standing up. A drop in the blood pressure indicates adrenal fatigue. Another simple way is by shining a light into the eyes and evaluating the pupil size. Normally, the light will cause the pupil to constrict and remain constricted. In individuals with adrenal fatigue, the pupil may dilate, remain unchanged, or even alternate between constriction and dilation.

You've most likely heard the phrase, "running on adrenaline," well that is exactly what many people do. When the body is over stressed, either physically or emotionally, there is an increased demand placed on the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline (epinephrine), steroidal hormones and other substances. In addition to stress, dietary habits- including overuse of sugar, alcohol, caffeine, and white flour- place additional demands on the adrenal glands. Some people may find that as their adrenal glands become stressed that their dependency for stimulants increases to maintain a specific energy level. For example, drinking 1 cup of coffee turns into 3-4 cups during the day to stay energetic.

The adrenal glands are part of the endocrine system, producing over 30 hormones (for example, cortisol and aldosterone) to regulate fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism; water and salt balance; control inflammation; and many other essential metabolic processes of the body. These glands sit on top of the kidneys. When the body is under a high level of physical or emotional stress, the adrenal glands may become over-taxed and unable to synthesize optimal levels of adrenal hormones. The result may be dehydration, which interferes with nutrient delivery and contributes to aging and kidney problems. Improper adrenal function also affects the heart- causing a wide range of concerns, including arrhythmia, reduced cardiac output, hypertension, and possible heart attacks.

This synergestic blend of high quality ingredients also include vitamins C and E, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and chromium. Vitamin C is necessary for adrenal hormone synthesis and is often depleted during times of chronic stress. The minerals magnesium and zinc are considered to be key adrenal ingredients. Selenium, for its antioxidant benefits; and chromium, which supports vitamin C metabolism, are also important nutrients.
