Most coral calcium comes from Okinawa, but all coral calcium is not the same. In fact, there are several different grades and types that are so different they seem like different products altogether. Simply stated, coral calcium from Okinawa is not enough to ensure that it is a quality product.

The two types on the market are fossilized coral calcium, which comes from the shore, and marine coral calcium, which comes from the ocean. There are major differences between the two. When coral breaks off from the living reef, it ends up on the seabed. Eventually, some of it may wash up on shore where it can be more economically gathered by harvesting the seabed. By the time the fossilized coral washes ashore, however, its composition has changed such that the mineral content is vastly different in comparison to the marine coral.

Research on coral calcium touts its mineral content as being its key effectiveness. In addition to delivering calcium for bones and good health, it also delivers magnesium in approximately half the amount as calcium (the recommended ratio) along with essential trace minerals. Calcium and magnesium are important for maintaining your teeth and bones. Minerals help to create a more alkaline environment in the body, which serves to limit many disease states. For instance, cancer thrives in an acidic environment. Trace minerals are extremely important to maintaining good health, and because they are so severely depleted in the conventional food supply, having them in the coral calcium is extremely beneficial. The two ways to recognize these products is that they will show approximately 370 mg per 1000 mg of coral calcium, and when you read the source of magnesium in the ingredient list you will see added compounds like magnesium oxide, or magnesium chelate, or some term other than from coral calcium.

Marine coral calcium is environmentally friendly despite the fact that some claim the marine form harms marine ecology. In reality, premium marine coral calcium is collected from fragments of coral that have broken off and drifted to the bottom of the shallow Okinawan seabed, where it is harvested in such an environmentally friendly manner that the harvesting does not disturb the live seabeds. In fact, the Japanese government encourages these techniques because the coral reef actually flourishes when the seabeds are cleaned up. Harvesting operations are overseen by the Japanese government along with the World Wildlife Federation. Contrary to some of the fossilized calcium advertising claims, premium marine coral calcium is extremely environmentally friendly, and is the preferred form.

It can be difficult when comparing products to determine from the label whether a supplement is true marine coral calcium.
