The Berkey Light's unique design combines the age-old process of micro-porous filtration coupled with modern state-of-the-art technology and the highest quality materials to bring you the finest water filtration system available anywhere. The micro pores within the filters are so small that pathogenic bacterial are simply not able to pass through them. The media within the filter elements removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon known as "adsorption" which results from the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the media. This exclusive filter also incorporates proprietary "absorbing" media that are impregnated into the micro-porous filter for the IONIC absorption of pollutants into the filter. . This advanced technology was developed, refined, and proven through diligent, investigative research and testing performed by water purification specialists, researchers and engineers.

Another reason the Berkey Light is so effective in removing contaminants from water is the long period of time the water molecules are in contact with the filter media. For example, if you were to throw 100 steel ball bearings at a large magnet placed ten feet away, some would stick to the magnet but many would bounce off. However, if you were to walk over and place the ball bearings on the magnet, most if not all would adhere to the magnet. The same principle applies in water filtration. Filtration systems that rely on water pressure bombard the filters with water at 60-90 PSI. This allows very little contact time, typically less than a second, as water molecules slam into the filter element and bounce off its media. By comparison water molecules, passing through the "Torturous Path" structure of the Berkey Light's filters, are in contact with the filter media for five to ten minutes. The flow rate or time of exposure through the exclusive Black Berkey purification elements has been calculated to yield the greatest volume removal of toxic chemicals and pathogenic bacteria found in nature and caused by pollution of industry and agriculture.

The flexible Berkey Light's LED lighting system is designed for long-term use whether or not electrical power is available. When electricity is available, the LED lamps can be powered by the AC adapter (included with LED base) or the internal rechargeable batteries (included with LED base). During situations where electrical power is not available, the Berkey Battery Adapter (optional) provides an incredible two weeks of nighttime light from four small AA alkaline batteries and the Berkey MP Solar Charger (optional) provides an endless power supply.

To use, water is poured into the upper chamber. Gravity draws this water through the exclusive Black Berkey filter elements. Contaminants are captured on and within the micro-porous filter element and are separated from the water. Each durable and efficient elements can be cleaned with a toothbrush and last for up to 2,000 gallons. What's more, the unique Black Berkey filter elements are self-sterilizing. The filtered water then collects in the lower chamber where it can be drawn through the spigot.

Often it is desirable to refill the upper chamber while some of the water from the previous cycle remains in the lower chamber. With non transparent or opaque systems the upper chamber must be removed from the lower chamber. This is inconvenient and messy because water continues to drip from the filter elements as the user checks for water levels in the lower chamber. This is especially difficult in no or low light conditions. If the user does not check the water level there is a risk that the upper chamber will be overfilled and later cause the lower chamber to overflow. The Berkey Light solves this problem with its transparent design. The user is able to see the water level in both chambers at all times.

The system is joined together during use allowing the Berkey Light to be moved while it is filtering. This can be important when the Berkey Light is used in an area for food preparation and later needed in a dining area. The system can also be disjoined for cleaning, maintenance and transport etc.
